Tiger Woods has won the GRI 2005 Player of the Year. While the chase wasn't officially over until Woods won the playoff over John Daly in the WGC American Express Championship, for all intents and purposes it was over when he won the WGC NEC a month earlier.

The key to Woods best season since 1999 and 2000 was his domination of the majors and the WGC events. Woods won the Masters and British Open, finished 2nd at the U.S. Open and tied for 4th at the PGA Championship. Woods got off to a slow start in the WGC's by being eliminated in the 2nd round of the WGC match play, but followed up with wins in the NEC and the AMEX. His early-season win at the Buick Invitational and later at the Ford Championship at Doral turned out to be icing on the cake.

Woods key challengers, 2004 GRI Player of the Year Vijay Singh and Phil Mickelson each have notched four 2004 wins, but excepting Mickelson's PGA win, none of them in the bigger events.

To be eligible for Player of the year, a player must lead either the GRI Cumulative Performance Index (CPI) or the GRI Quality Performance Index (QPI) at seasons end. If one player leads both indices, that player is automatically named player of the year. Tiger Woods has won both the QPI and CPI and thus wins Player of the Year automatically.

If different players were to lead the CPI and QPI at year's end, then a series of tiebreakers would have settled the question. Woods also dominated all of those as well.

Here's a breakdown of the GRI Player of the Year Leaders:

CPI - Total GRI points earned for the season - Woods is the 2005-CPI Champion. Woods finished the season with a 634-point lead over Vijay Singh. To understand how dominating that is, 634 points is equivalent to the winners share of a major plus a top flight event like Bay Hill or the Memorial... or equivalent to two WGC wins.

QPI - Average Points-Per-Event - Woods is the 2005-QPI Champion. The race was virtually over at the end of the PGA Championship... and officially after the WGC American Express Championship. Woods finished the season with a remarkable 63+ points earned per event lead in this category.

More evidence of Tigers 2005 domination is found in the tiebreakers. As Woods won both the CPI and QPI the tiebreakers weren't needed, but if they had been... Tiger would have dominated.

Tiebreaker #1 - Major Championship Victories - Woods wins this tiebreaker with two major victories in the Masters and British Open. Phil Mickelson and Michael Campbell had one each.

Tiebreaker #2 - Total Wins - Woods has six wins while Mickelson and Singh trailed with four each.

Tiebreaker #3 - Head to Head Comparison - Woods finished the season with a 80+ point-per-event lead over Singh in common events played.

The bottom line: Even though his win total is not as large as 1999 and 2000, Tiger Woods had a stellar major and WGC season. Aside from missed cuts at the EDS Byron Nelson & FUNAI Classic, he played consistently well in all of his other events.

In addition to dominating the CPI and QPI used in the Player of the Year calculations, Woods dominated the rest of the GRI indices as well.

Player Ranking Index - As of the end of the 2005 season Woods has a rating of 145.52, more than 43 points ahead of #2 Vijay Singh.

Player of the Month - Woods won the GRI Player of the Month 4 times (January, April, July, August)

Major Player of the Year - Woods dominated by winning the Masters and British Open and finishing 2nd and T4 in the other two, earning 1190 GRI ranking points in the process.

DIF Scoring Average - Woods averaged 2.68 less shots PER ROUND than the average of all the players in the same events. He also leads #2 Singh by more than .43 of a shot per round.

Heat Index - The Heat Index (who's the hottest player) is calculated over the most recent 20-week period. At end of 2005 Woods had more than lapped the competition with a 100% rating compared to 45% for his nearest competitor.

By our measure and any other legitimate measure we can find… Tiger Woods IS the 2005 Player of the Year.
