When he won the British Open Tiger Woods had won the GRI 2005 Major Championship Player of the Year. Rallying for a tie for 4th at the PGA Championship was icing on the cake.

The GRI Majors Index is determined by compiling the total GRI ranking points earned by a player in the four majors in a calendar year. Woods two wins (Masters & British) are worth 400 GRI ranking points each, and when added to the 240 points earned for his 2nd place finish at the U.S. Open and the 150 points for his PGA Championship T4 finish, he amassed 1190 points for the season.

Woods nearest challenger, U.S. Open Champion Michael Campbell, earned 630.37 GRI ranking points for the season followed by PGA Champion, Phil Mickelson who earned 508.67.

Woods stellar major season was highlighted by the fact that he was the only player to finish in the top-5 in all four majors. Vijay Singh was the only other player to gain 4 top-10 finishes and Michael Campbell and Retief Goosen notched three top-10's each. Only 14 players made the cut in all four majors. (See notes below)

Overview of 2005 Majors

Week 14 - The Masters - Tiger Woods overcame a tenacious challenge from Chris DiMarco to secure the title in a playoff. Woods earns 400 GRI ranking points for the victory while DiMarco earns 240 for 2nd place. Retief Goosen and Luke Donald earn 180 points apiece for their 3rd place tie.

Week 24 - U.S. Open - Michael Campbell earns his first ever major title and 400 GRI ranking points to go with it. Tiger Woods earns 240 for solo 2nd while Sergio Garcia, Tim Clark and Mark Hensby earn 166.67 points apiece for their 3rd place tie.

Week 28 - the Open Championship - Tiger Woods coasts to a 5-shot victory to win his 2nd major of the year at St. Andrews. Scotland's own, Colin Montgomerie finishes 2nd to earn 240 points, while Jose Maria Olazabal and Fred Couples finish tied for 3rd, earning 180 points apiece.

Week 32 - PGA Championship - Phil Mickelson pulled out the victory at Baltustrol GC with a birdie on the 72nd hole earning the 400-point top prize. Thomas Bjorn and Steve Elkington earned 220 points for their tie for 2nd, while Tiger Woods and Davis Love III earned 150 points apiece for their 4th place tie

Majors Notes for the 2005 season:

• Woods is the only player to finish in the top-5 in all 4 majors. (1-2-1-T4)

• Woods and Vijay Singh are the only players to finish in the top-10 in all 4 majors (Singh T5-T6-T5-T10)

• Retief Goosen just missed on 4 top-10's (T6-T11-T5-T6)

• Only 8 players notched two top-10's.

• 55 Players earned entry into the ALL 4 majors, but only 53 played all as Padraig Harrington withdrew prior to the British due to the death of his father, and Ernie Els injury prevented him from playing in the PGA.

• 14 Players made the cut in all 4 majors.

• 3 Players played in all 4 majors and missed the cut in all of them -all past major champions. (Rich Beem, David Duval & Shaun Micheel)

Criteria for Golf Rank Index - Major Championship Player of the Year

The GRI Major Championship Player of the Year is based on points earned by the top-35 finishers in each of the 4 majors; The Masters, US Open, British Open and PGA.

Must Win - To be named Major Championship Player of the Year, a player MUST have at least one win in one of the 4 major championships. Regardless of how many points earned, any player without a win will be placed behind ALL players with a win.

The player who wins the most majors in the calendar year is automatically named the GRI-Major Championship Player of the Year.

Should 2 players win two majors each, or 4 players win one major each, total GRI ranking points earned for the 4 majors will determine the winner.

In the event of a tie, co-winners will be named.

Eligibility - All players participating in any of the 4 majors are eligible. They do not need to be a member of any professional golf tour.

'04 Masters Champion, Phil Mickelson won the 2004 GRI Major Championship Player of the Year with 956 points followed by U.S. Open Champion Retief Goosen with 600 points. PGA Champion Vijay Singh finished the Major's campaign with 594 points and British Open Champion Todd Hamilton finished with 400 points. Ernie Els earned 732 points for his efforts in the 2004 majors, enough for 2nd place. However, since Els did not win one of the 4 majors, he was placed 5th behind all 4 of the major champions.
