By finishing 2nd at the Tour Championship presented by Coca Cola, Tiger Woods finished 2005 with a dominating lead on the GRI Heat Index. As the top player of the Heat Index, Woods is rated at 100% while #2 Vijay Singh, who finished T4 at the Tour Championship, remains below 50% with a rating of 44.47%.

On the heals of his Tour Championship victory, Bart Bryant, with a rating of 41.63%, jumped from #72 to #3 on the final Heat Index chart of the season. Retief Goosen moved from #9 to #4 with a Heat Index rating of 36.65 and Davis Love III moved from #10 to #5 with a Heat Index rating of 36.51%.

The Heat Index will take a break for the next few months as the next GRI rated event is the Mercedes Championship to be played in January of 2006.

The GRI Heat Index is designed to determine the hottest player in GRI ranked events on a percentage basis. The index is made up of a declining scale of GRI ranking points earned by a player over the last 20 GRI ranked event weeks divided by an events played factor.

Heating Up…

#1 - Tiger Woods - (100.00%) - Tiger won two majors and fell only 2-strokes shy in the others to dominate the majors. Add in WGC wins at the NEC and AMEX… by anyone's measure… he's scorching HOT.

Cooling Off…

Everybody Else - Sure Mickelson and Michael Campbell have major feathers in their cap but neither player's performance is in the same league as Woods. Mickelson had a better major season than Singh, but Singh more consistently remains on the first page of the leader board while Mickelson is prone to lower finishes when he's not winning.

Of the other big names attempting to climb the Heat Index, Goosen played great overseas but wasn't able to generate Sunday momentum in the majors. Perennial favorite Ernie Els was lost for the final quarter of the season due to knee surgery.

Criteria for Golf Rank Index - HEAT Index

The GRI - Heat Index is designed to determine the hottest player in GRI ranked events on a percentage basis. The index is made up of a declining scale of GRI ranking points earned by a player over the last 20 GRI ranked event weeks divided by an events played factor.

Points earned for the current week receive 100% of their value, then decline 5% every week thereafter. The result is that past performances are always declining in value, which means to maintain a top position, a player must play often and well to replace lost points.

The leader of the Heat Index is always designated as being "100% Hot". A player with a Heat Factor of 50.0 is considered to be 50%, or half as hot as the leader.
