For all intents and purposes, Tiger Woods locked up the 2005
Cumulative Performance Index (CPI) after his win at the WGC-NEC Invitational in
August, yet it took until week 42 to officially crown him as champion. Woods
finished the season with a total of 2944.41 GRI points earned, 634 more than #2
Vijay Singh who finished the season with 2309.49 points.
Phil
Mickelson did not play the Tour Championship yet held onto the #3 spot with
1427.09 GRI ranking points but Retief Goosen passed Sergio Garcia for the #4
spot in the final week of the season. Goosen earned 1236.69 points for the year
while #5 Garcia earned 1167.94 points.
At the end of May, the race for
this year's CPI was looking like another Singh runaway, but over the final 5
months Woods performed much more like the Tiger of 1999 and 2000. The key to
Woods domination of the CPI was his performance in the majors and the WGC
events. Woods earned 1190 ranking points by winning two of the four majors and
another 655+ points in winning two of the three WGC events.
The CPI
index is a total of GRI ranking points earned within a single season. Points
are earned by order of finish and based on the strength of field in each event.
Premier events such as the majors and events with strong fields are worth more
ranking points than events with lesser fields. Vijay Singh led the 2004 CPI
with a total of 2771 points.
