Tiger Woods domination of the 2005 GRI Quality Performance
Index (QPI) was so great he could have taken the last 6 weeks off with no risk
of losing the lead. Woods finished the season with a 2005 GRI points-per-event
average of 140.21. Woods was the only player with a QPI rating above 100 and he
finished the season more than 63 points ahead of #2 Vijay Singh who had a
rating of 76.98.
Retief Goosen used a T4 finish at the Tour
Championship, and the absence of previous #3 Phil Mickelson, to move into the
#3 position with a points per event average of 68.70. Mickelson followed less
than a point behind with an average of 67.96. With an average of 55.15 Sergio
Garcia was the only other player with an average above the 50 mark.
The QPI will start from scratch with the Mercedes Championship in January of
2006. GRI will rate 47 or 48 events. If the Zurich Classic of New Orleans can
overcome its '05 hurricane troubles, the schedule will be the full 48 events.
The 2005-QPI is determined by totaling all GRI ranking points a player
earns in a year, divided by the number of events entered. Big events such as
the majors, and events with stronger fields are worth more points than events
with lesser fields.
