Carl Pettersson rallied for a 2nd place finish at the Southern Farm Bureau Classic and coupled with his win at the Chrysler Championship a week earlier, slipped by Tiger Woods to claim the GRI October 2005 Player of the Month.

The October race turned out to be a long one, stretching over 6 weeks of the season. Although played November (week 44), the Southern Farm Bureau Classic was postponed from week 40 and thus still counted in the October standings.

Pettersson's first GRI Player of the Month honor was well earned as in addition to his win at the Chrysler and his 2nd place finish at the Southern Farm, he also finished T15th at the FUNAI Classic at Walt Disney World Resort, his only other start of the month.

Despite winning the WGC-AMEX in early October, Woods missed the cut at the FUNAI and thus earned zero points for the week. Any top-20 finish at Disney would have been enough to hold of Pettersson.

Overview of GRI rated October events:

Week 39 - Chrysler Classic of Greensboro - K.J. Choi earns 169.95 GRI ranking points for the win while Shigeki Maruyama earned 101.97 for 2nd place. Charles Warren, Brandt Jobe and Jason Bohn earned 67.98 points apiece for their 3rd place tie.

Week 40 - WGC-American Express Championship - Tiger Woods earns 318.35 points for his victory over John Daly in a playoff. Daly earns 191.01 for his effort. Henrik Stenson, Sergio Garcia, and Colin Montgomerie earn 132.65 points apiece for their 3rd place tie.

Week 41 - The Championship at Las Vegas - Wes Short Jr. earns 208.90 points for his playoff victory over Jim Furyk. Furyk earned 125.34 for 2nd place while Harrison Frazar and Ted Purdy earned 94.01 points apiece for their 3rd place tie.

Week 42 - FUNAI Classic at the Walt Disney World Resort - Lucas Glover prevailed in a birdie-fest and earned 199.75 points for his effort. Jim Furyk earned 125.34 points for 2nd while Ryan Palmer, Geoff Ogilvy, Justin Rose, Harrison Frazar and Rich Beem earned 63.52 points apiece for their 5-way 3rd place tie.

Week 43 - Chrysler Championship - Carl Pettersson claims the victory and 229.60 GRI ranking points while Chad Campbell rallies to finish 2nd and earn 137.76. Seven players tie for 3rd place and earn 63.63 points apiece.

Week 44a - Southern Farm Bureau Classic - Heath Slocum fired a final round 66 to take a two shot victory over Carl Pettersson and Loren Roberts. Slocum earned 111.15 points for the victory while Pettersson and Roberts earned 61.33 points each for their 2nd place finish.

Criteria for Golf Rank Index - Player of the Month

The Golf Rank Index (GRI) - Player of the Month is determined by totaling GRI ranking points earned in all GRI ranked professional golf events scheduled within a months time frame. Events that bridge a months end or beginning of another, are generally placed in the month in which they end, but may be shifted to the prior month to balance the number of events to be ranked in each month. In the event of a first place tie, co-winners will be named.

Eligibility - All players participating in GRI ranked events are eligible. They do not need to be a member of any professional golf tour.

Must Win - To be named a player of the month, the player MUST have a win in a GRI ranked event in the month. Should any player without a win earn the highest number of GRI ranking points for a given month, the player will be placed behind the highest ranked player with a win.
