By backing up a strong T4 finish in the PGA with a win at the WGC-NEC, Tiger Woods stole the GRI August 2005 Player of the Month race from Phil Mickelson.

In most cases the winner of a major and its 400 guaranteed GRI points, is a lock to win Player of the Month. Going into the NEC Mickelson had a 90+ point lead over #2 Goosen, but with the NEC boasting a great field, and being worth 316+ points to the winner, there were five additional players within reach of the lead with a NEC win.

Goosen fell away early as did the most of the other challengers, but Woods climbed to the top of the final leader board as Mickelson fell to the lower half of the pack. As it turned out, a top-20 finish would have been enough for Mickelson to hold the lead; instead he finished tied for 51st.

Goosen, winner of the International earlier in the month, finished in 3rd place for August Player of the Month.

Overview of GRI rated July events:

Week 31 - the INTERNATIONAL - Retief Goosen earned 224.95 points for the win, while Brandt Jobe earned 134.97 for 2nd and Jeff Brehaut earned 112.48 for his 3rd place finish.

Week 32 - PGA Championship - Phil Mickelson claims the win and 400 GRI ranking points while Thomas Bjorn and Steve Elkington earn 220 points apiece for their 2nd place tie. Tiger Woods and Davis Love III earn 150 points each for their 4th place tie.

Week 33 - WGC-NEC Invitational - Tiger Woods found it tough going on the final day, yet managed to hold on for a 1-stroke victory over Chris DiMarco. Woods earned 316.25 points for the victory while DiMarco earned 189.75 for 2nd place. Vijay Singh, Paul McGinley and Ryan Palmer shared 3rd place and earned 131.77 points each.

Week 33a - Reno-Tahoe Open - Vaughn Taylor emerged victorious for the 2nd year in a row and earned 108.55 points for the victory. Jonathan Kaye finished 2nd to earn 65.13 points and Todd Fischer earned 54.28 for 3rd.

Week 34 - Buick Championship - Brad Faxon earns 155.00 points for a playoff victory over Tjaart Van der Walt who earns 93.00 points for 2nd place. Justin Rose missed out on the playoff by a single shot and earns 77.50 points for 3rd place.

Criteria for Golf Rank Index - Player of the Month

The Golf Rank Index (GRI) - Player of the Month is determined by totaling GRI ranking points earned in all GRI ranked professional golf events scheduled within a months time frame. Events that bridge a months end or beginning of another, are generally placed in the month in which they end, but may be shifted to the prior month to balance the number of events to be ranked in each month. In the event of a first place tie, co-winners will be named.

Eligibility - All players participating in GRI ranked events are eligible. They do not need to be a member of any professional golf tour.

Must Win - To be named a player of the month, the player MUST have a win in a GRI ranked event in the month. Should any player without a win earn the highest number of GRI ranking points for a given month, the player will be placed behind the highest ranked player with a win.
