Even before Vijay Singh won the playoff over John Daly in April's final event, The Shell Houston Open, Tiger Woods win at the Masters had secured Woods' position as winner of the GRI April 2005 Player of the Month.

The GRI player of the Month is determined by totaling all of the GRI ranking points earned by a player within a calendar month.

The Masters was Woods only outing for the month, but as the first major of the year, the victory was worth a guaranteed 400 points to Woods. #2 Singh's win at Houston was worth just over 173 points, to bring his total to 292.95 for the month, still more than 107 points behind Woods. Singh's other 119.20 points were from his tie for 5th at the Masters.

Other winners for the month included Phil Mickelson at the BellSouth Classic and Peter Lonard at the MCI Heritage.

Overview of GRI rated March events:

Week 13 - BellSouth Classic - Phil Mickelson earns 148.60 GRI ranking points for the playoff win while his 4 playoff victims, Jose Maria Olazabal, Rich Beem, Brandt Jobe, & Arjun Atwal share 2nd place and each earn 66.87 points.

Week 14 - The Masters - Tiger Woods took the 400 winners share after an excellent dual with gritty Chris DiMarco. DiMarco lost to Woods birdie on the 1st playoff hole but still earned 240 points for the effort. Retief Goosen and Luke Donald earned 180 points apiece for their 3rd place tie.

Week 15- MCI Heritage - Peter Lonard survived a battle of attrition with Darren Clarke to win the event and the 189.95 points for first place. Clarke, Jim Furyk, Davis Love III, and Billy Andrade shared a 4-way tie for 2nd, each earning 85.48 points.

Week 16 - Shell Houston Open - Vijay Singh becomes the first player to win back-to-back in Houston and earns 173.75 points for his effort. John Daly loses the playoff to Singh but earns 104.25 for 2nd, while Jose Maria Olazabal earns 86.88 points for 3rd.

Criteria for Golf Rank Index - Player of the Month

The Golf Rank Index (GRI) - Player of the Month is determined by totaling GRI ranking points earned in all GRI ranked professional golf events scheduled within a months time frame. Events that bridge a months end or beginning of another, are generally placed in the month in which they end, but may be shifted to the prior month to balance the number of events to be ranked in each month. In the event of a first place tie, co-winners will be named.

Eligibility - All players participating in GRI ranked events are eligible. They do not need to be a member of any professional golf tour.

Must Win - To be named a player of the month, the player MUST have a win in a GRI ranked event in the month. Should any player without a win earn the highest number of GRI ranking points for a given month, the player will be placed behind the highest ranked player with a win.
