Fred Funk prevailed over the deepest field in professional golf to win the weather plagued PLAYERS Championship. In the process, Funk wins the GRI March 2005 Player of the Month. Funk earned 339.55 points for the PLAYERS win to total 341.90 for the month. Funk's other 2.35 points came from his T23 at Bay Hill

Despite leading Funk by more than 74 points, Vijay Singh's 416.71-point total does not win the March Player of the Month. Singh misses out because he failed to meet the requirement of winning an event during the month, thus Singh is placed behind Funk. Singh had near misses at the Honda Classic and at Bay Hill, finishing 2nd both times.

Bay Hill champion Kenny Perry finishes the month in 3rd place with 273.85 points and Honda Classic champion Tiger Woods finishes the month in 4th place with 249.85.

Overview of GRI rated March events:

Week 9 - Ford Championship at Doral - Tiger Woods earns 247.50 points for the win while Mickelson earned 148.50 points for his 2nd place finish. Vijay Singh and Zach Johnson rallied on Sunday to finish tied for 3rd earning 111.38 points each.

Week 10 - Honda Classic - Padraig Harrington notched his first ever win on the PGA tour and earned 176.35 points in the process. Vijay Singh and Joe Ogilvie lost in a playoff to Harrington to earn 96.99 points apiece.

Week 11- Bay Hill Invitational Presented by MasterCard - Kenny Perry claims his first win of the season and gains 273.85 points. Vijay Singh and Graeme McDowell earn 150.62 apiece for their 2nd place tie.

Week 12 - The Players Championship - Fred Funk earned 339.55 points for the victory while runners-up Luke Donald, Scott Verplank and Tom Lehman earned 169.78 points apiece. According to GRI strength of field ratings, the 2005 PLAYERS featured the deepest field of any GRI ranked event since we've been keeping records. The much anticipated showdown of the "Big Four" of Singh, Woods, Els & Mickelson failed to materialize as the best finish by any of them was Singh's tie for 12th.

Criteria for Golf Rank Index - Player of the Month

The Golf Rank Index (GRI) - Player of the Month is determined by totaling GRI ranking points earned in all GRI ranked professional golf events scheduled within a months time frame. Events that bridge a months end or beginning of another, are generally placed in the month in which they end, but may be shifted to the prior month to balance the number of events to be ranked in each month. In the event of a first place tie, co-winners will be named.

Eligibility - All players participating in GRI ranked events are eligible. They do not need to be a member of any professional golf tour.

Must Win - To be named a player of the month, the player MUST have a win in a GRI ranked event in the month. Should any player without a win earn the highest number of GRI ranking points for a given month, the player will be placed behind the highest ranked player with a win.
