How the 2004 GRI - Ranking Points Were Calculated

The Golf Rank Index uses two main factors in calculating ranking points The first is order of finish points and the second is a tournament value for each of the tournaments.

Order of Finish Points (OFP)

Order of Finish Points are awarded to a player based on his order of finish in a tournament. Points in the four major tournaments are awarded through 35th place. Points for WGC events, the Players, & Tour Championship are awarded through 30th place. All other tour events award points through 25th place.

Major Tournaments Points: (Masters, U.S Open, British & PGA) 100 points for 1st, 60 points for 2nd, 50 points for 3rd, down to 1 point for 35th place. No points are awarded for a finish below a tie for 35th.

Other Top Tier Event Points:: (WGC events, Players Championship & Tour Championship) 100 points for 1st, 60 points for 2nd, 50 points for 3rd, down to 1 point for 30th place. No points are awarded for a finish below a tie for 30th.

Regular Tour Event Points: 100 points for 1st, 60 points for 2nd, 50 points for 3rd, down to 1 point for 25th place. No points are awarded for a finish below a tie for 25th.

Should two or more players tie for a position, the points are split. (Example: For a two-way tie for 2nd we would use the following formula (50 + 60) / 2 = 55)

The Tournament Value (TV)

The purpose of having a Tournament Value is the recognition that not all tournaments are equal in importance or have the same strength of field. A win or high finish in any of the majors, the Players Championship, The WGC's, The Tour Championship and other tournaments with strong fields are worth more value than a tournament with a lesser field.

The four majors, the Players Championship, the Tour Championship, and the World Golf Championship events (WGC's) are rated separately from the other tournaments. The Masters, U.S. Open, The Open Championship, and the PGA Championship are assigned a Tournament Value of 4.0 The Players Championship is assigned a value of 3.2 and the 3 WGC events, plus the season ending Tour Championship is assigned a value of 3.0

All other tournaments are assigned a Tournament Value by assessing the strength of the field based on how many, and the rank of the top 60 GRI fully ranked and provisionally ranked players are in the field. The GRI Quality Performance Index for the 52 weeks prior to the start of the event is used to determine player rankings. The top GRI ranked player receives a higher value than the 2nd, etc... down to the 60th GRI ranked player.

The Order of Finish points for a player are then multiplied by the Tournament Value to arrive at an adjusted point value earned for the tournament. The highest point value that can be earned is 400 points for a first place finish in any of the four majors. The Player Championship follows with a winning point value of 320 and the Tour Championship and WGC winners are guaranteed 300 points. Should a regular tour event attract a sufficient number of the GRI top 60 fully ranked and/or provisionally ranked players, the event could be worth up to 300 points to the champion. A minimum of 100 points is awarded in all tournaments.
