Going into the PGA Championship there remained only three players, Retief Goosen, Todd Hamilton and Ernie Els, posed a threat to Phil Mickelson winning GRI's Major Championship Player of the Year. The issue wasn't decided until Ernie Els putt for par on his 72nd hole of the PGA missed its mark.

Els needed to win while Mickelson finished no better than a tie for 4th to have a chance at GRI Major Player of the Year. Playing in the fourth from last group, Els was tied with his playing partner Chris DiMarco at 8-under going into the 72nd hole. After Els had made bogey, DiMarco two-putted for par, ending Els hopes of winning. Too bad for Els, as two groups later, Mickelson would miss a par putt of his own on the 72nd hole to fall into a tie for 6th.

By the time Els fell out of contention, Mickelson's other challengers for GRI Major Championship Player of the Year had long since fallen away. Retief Goosen could have surpassed Mickelson by winning his second major of the year, but was forced to withdraw prior to the start of the PGA due to an injury sustained in a jet-skiing accident a few weeks ago.

Todd Hamilton could have surpassed Mickelson by winning his second major, but a third-round 75 put him out of contention as well.

The GRI Major Championship Player of the Year is based on points earned by the top-35 finishers in each of the 4 majors, The Masters, US Open, British Open and PGA. The winners of the 4 majors are automatically placed ahead of all non-winners.

Mickelson wins the title with 956 points followed by US Open Champion; Retief Goosen with 600 points, PGA Champion; Vijay Singh with 594 points and British Open Champion; Todd Hamilton with 400 points.

#5 Ernie Els earned 732 points for his efforts in the majors this year, enough for 2nd place. However, since Els did not win one of the 4 majors, he was placed 5th behind all 4 of the major champions.

Major NOTES:

Mickelson and Els were the only players to finish in the top-10 in all 4 of the 2004 majors. Mickelson won the Masters, 2nd at the US Open 3rd at the British and T6 at the PGA. Els finished 2nd at Augusta, T9 at the US Open, 2nd at the British and T4 at the PGA.

Chris DiMarco was the only other player to finish in the top-10 in at least 3 majors; T6 Masters, T9 US Open, T63 British, and T2 at the PGA.

5 players finished in a tie for 35th or better in all 4 majors, thus earning GRI ranking points in all 4 events; Mickelson, Singh, Els, K.J. Choi & Tiger Woods.

10 players made the cut in all 4 majors: Mickelson, Singh, Els, Choi, Woods, DiMarco, Steve Flesch, Scott Verplank, Shaun Micheel & Charles Howell III

Ernie Els wins the "Woulda, Shoulda, Coulda" award by missing playoffs at the Masters, and PGA by one shot, then losing the British Open playoff by one shot.

Todd Hamilton didn't necessarily prove that he's as good as his British Open win would indicate, but he showed that he belongs in the majors with a T40 finish at Augusta and a T37 at the PGA.

Shaun Micheel, last years surprise winner at the PGA also proved he's worthy by making the cut in all 4 majors.

Ben Curtis, last years Cinderella story, and 2003 British Open champion, didn't fare quite as well, as he finished an impressive 30th at the US Open, but missed the cut in the other 3 majors.

Criteria for Golf Rank Index - Major Championship Player of the Year

The Golf Rank Index (GRI) - Major Championship Player of the Year is determined by totaling GRI ranking points earned in four majors championships. (The Masters, U.S. Open, British Open, PGA)

Must Win - To be named Major Championship Player of the Year, a player MUST have at least one win in one of the 4 major championships. Regardless of how many points earned, any player without a win will be placed behind ALL players with a win.

The player who wins the most majors in the calendar year is automatically named the GRI-Major Championship Player of the Year.

Should 2 players win two majors each, or 4 players win one major each, total GRI ranking points earned for the 4 majors will determine the winner.

In the event of a tie, co-winners will be named.

Eligibility - All players participating in any of the 4 majors are eligible. They do not need to be a member of any professional golf tour.
