Ernie Els was able to hold on to the final 2004 Quality Performance Index (QPI) despite Vijay Singh's incredible run over the last few months of the season.

The QPI average is derived by totaling all GRI ranking points earned for the year, divided by the number of events played to arrive at a points per event average.

Els finishes the 2004 campaign with an average of 109.38, almost 14 full points ahead of #2 Vijay Singh who finishes with an average of 95.55. Despite notching only a single win for the season, #3 Tiger Woods finished the season with an average of 89.33, while #4 Phil Mickelson finished with an average of 82.45.

The keys to Els taking the 2004 QPI were his consistent top finishes in the 4 majors and the fact that his 3 wins were in events with strong fields and thus worth higher point levels.

Singh did claim three wins in his first 20 events, however, all three were in events with strength of fields rated 31st or below out of the 48 events played in 2004. Singh's average for his first 20 events was only 61.69. Singh's average for the 9 events from the Buick Open forward was 175.64.

Also favoring Els is a comparison of the 13 common events played by both Els and Singh. Els averaged 104.68 points per event when Singh was in the field, compared to Singh's average of 73.33. Another factor benefiting Els was that the strength of field rating for all of his 16 events played was over 2.0, while 7 of Singh's wins were in events rated below 2.

In the final analysis, the QPI rewards quality and not quantity. While Els played just over half as many events as Singh, Els performed more consistently in his events than did Singh.
