A win in the month's last event, the Chrysler Championship, was enough to propel Vijay Singh past Ernie Els for the GRI October 2004 Player of the Month. Singh earned 230.92 points for his victory in Tampa and when added to the 112.27 earned for a 2nd place finish in the FUNAI Classic gave him 343.19 points for the month.

Els participated in just one event in October, the WGC-AMEX but his win in the event earned him 300 points, enough to finish in the #2 spot.

October marks the second overall and second straight player of the month award for Singh. He dominated the September race and had he shot one single stroke better at the WGC-NEC in August he could have won three months in a row. Singh finished 2nd in the monthly race 4 times; January, April, July and August.

To win the player of the month, a player must have a win in the period. In addition to #1 Singh and #2 Els, other winners for the month were #3 Ryan Palmer at the FUNAI Classic, #6 Brent Geiberger in Greensboro, #8 Andre Stolz in Las Vegas and # 14 Fred Funk at the Southern Farm Bureau Classic.

Overview of October GRI rated events:

Week 39 - WGC - American Express Championship - Ernie Els seized the lead in round two and held on for the victory and 300 points. #2 finisher, Thomas earned 180 points and David Howell finished 3rd to earn 150 points. Darren Clarke and Sergio Garcia earned 112.50 points apiece for their tie for 4th place.

Week 39a - Southern Farm Bureau Classic - Fred Funk failed to qualify for the AMEX but did the next best thing winning the alternate event. Funk earned 113 points for the win. Ryan Palmer earned 67.80 for 2nd place.

Week 40 - Michelin Championship at Las Vegas - Andre Stolz surprised the field by notching not only his first top-25 of the year, but the win as well. Stoltz's victory was worth 152.24 points while runners-up Tom Lehman, Harrison Frazar and Tag Ridings earned 76.12 points each.

Week 41 - Chrysler Classic of Greensboro - Brent Geiberger won his 2nd Tour event of his career and his first of the 2004 campaign to claim the winner's share of 166.76 points. Michael Allen earned 100.06 for 2nd while Chris Smith earned 83.38 for 3rd.

Week 42 - FUNAI Classic at the WALT DISNEY WORLD Resort - Ryan Palmer shot a sizzling final round 62 to claim 204.12 first place points. Vijay Singh and Briny Baird earned 112.27 points each for their 2nd place tie.

Week 43 - Chrysler Championship - Vijay Singh notched his only win of October, but 9th of the season in Tampa. The victory was worth 230.92 points, while Tommy Armour III and Jesper Parnevik earned 127.01 points each for their 2nd place tie.

Criteria for Golf Rank Index - Player of the Month

The Golf Rank Index (GRI) - Player of the Month is determined by totaling GRI ranking points earned in all GRI ranked professional golf events scheduled within a months time frame. Events that bridge a months end or beginning of another, are generally placed in the month in which they end, but may be shifted to the prior month to balance the number of events to be ranked in each month. In the event of a first place tie, co-winners will be named.

Eligibility - All players participating in GRI ranked events are eligible. They do not need to be a member of any professional golf tour.

Must Win - To be named a player of the month, the player MUST have a win in a GRI ranked event in the month. Should any player without a win earn the highest number of GRI ranking points for a given month, the player will be placed behind the highest ranked player with a win.
