Going into the last week Vijay Singh had all but salted away the GRI September 2004 Player of the month, with only Bart Bryant holding a slim change at seizing the lead. Singh removed any of those doubts, not only by winning his 3rd event of the month but by also winning the monthly honor by the largest margin since GRI has been selecting a monthly winner.

For the month of September, Singh earned 537.32 points, 370.93 more than September runner-up Stewart Cink who finished the month with 166.39. The previous record margin was in February 2003 when Tiger Woods outdistanced Mike Weir by 170 points. Singh's total also eclipsed the record total for a single month. Phil Mickelson held the previous monthly record with 526.53 in April of 2004. Singh also becomes the only player to win 3 out of 3 starts in a month since GRI has been honoring the Player of the Month.

Bart Bryant, Valero Texas Open winner, and the only other September winner, finished the month at #3 with 135.56 points.

Overview of September GRI rated events:

Week 35 - Duetsche Bank Championship - Vijay Singh overcomes Tiger Woods to take the title and earn 165.34 points. Tiger Woods and Adam Scott tied for 2nd to earn 90.94 points each. With the victory Singh also takes the #1 position in the Official World Golf Ranking from Tiger Woods.

Week 36 - Bell Canadian Open - Vijay Singh overtakes the Canadian sentimental favorite, Mike Weir, to win the title in a playoff. Singh earns 173.44 points for the victory while Weir earns 104.06 for 2nd place. Joe Ogilvie earns 86.72 points for solo 3rd.

Week 37 - Valero Texas Open - A tough date to attract a good field as it plays opposite the Ryder Cup, but the event was exciting as Bart Bryant notched his first ever Tour victory. Bryant earned 135.56 points for the win, while Patrick Sheehan earned 81.34 for 2nd.

Week 38 - 84 Lumber Classic - Vijay Singh wins again! Singh added 198.54 points for his 3rd victory of the month while Stewart Cink added119.12 for 2nd. A 4-way tie for second earned Pat Perez, Zach Johnson, Chris DiMarco & Jonathan Byrd 69.49 points apiece.

Criteria for Golf Rank Index - Player of the Month

The Golf Rank Index (GRI) - Player of the Month is determined by totaling GRI ranking points earned in all GRI ranked professional golf events scheduled within a months time frame. Events that bridge a months end or beginning of another, are generally placed in the month in which they end, but may be shifted to the prior month to balance the number of events to be ranked in each month. In the event of a first place tie, co-winners will be named.

Eligibility - All players participating in GRI ranked events are eligible. They do not need to be a member of any professional golf tour.

Must Win - To be named a player of the month, the player MUST have a win in a GRI ranked event in the month. Should any player without a win earn the highest number of GRI ranking points for a given month, the player will be placed behind the highest ranked player with a win.
