ISteward Cink claimed a wire-to-wire victory at the WGC-NEC Invitational to barely sneak by Vijay Singh for GRI August Player of the Month. Cink's earned points in 3 events for the month to total 402.83 while Singh totaled exactly 400 points for August.

It's rare that the winner of the major championship in a given month does not prevail in the rankings. The key to Cink pulling off the upset was his consistent play throughout the month. In addition to his NEC win Cink also earned 55+ points for his 5th place finish at the Buick Open and 38+ points for his tie for 6th at the International.

On the other hand, Singh earned all of his points for his win at the PGA. Had he shot one stroke better at the NEC, and thus joined the tie for 27th, he would have earned 4+ points, enough to win the monthly total.

The final point totals for the August shows Chris DiMarco in the #3 position despite not winning an event in the month. A tie for 2nd at the PGA and high finishes at the International and WGC-NEC was enough for him to stay ahead of other August event winners, Rod Pampling, Vaughn Taylor and Woody Austin.

#4 Rod Pampling claimed his first Tour victory at the International and finished the month with 253.88 points while another non-August event winner, Justin Leonard, finished in the #5 spot with 239.42 points.

Overview of August GRI rated events:

Week 31 - the INTERNATIONAL - In an event that featured 27 of the GRI Top-50 ranked players, Pampling earned 204.38 GRI points for his victory. Runner-up Alex Cejka earned 122.63 while 3rd place finisher; Tom Pernice, Jr. earned 102.19.

Week 32 - PGA Championship - Vijay Singh collects 400 points for his playoff victory over Chris DiMarco and Justin Leonard. The win bolts him to the week 2 lead for August honors. Leonard and DiMarco earn 220 points apiece for their 2nd place tie.

Week 33 - WGC-NEC Invitational - 300 points to Stewart Cink, along with the 102+ points earned in previous events, its just enough to edge out Vijay Singh for GRI August player of the month. Tiger Woods and Rory Sabbatini earned 165 points each for their tie for 2nd.

Week 33a - Reno Tahoe Open - Playing opposite the NEC, all but the most dedicated golf fans missed one of the most exciting finishes of the season as Vaughn Taylor prevailed in a 4-way playoff. Taylor earned 106.04 points for the win while his playoff challengers, Scott McCarron, Steve Allan and Hunter Mahan earned 53.02 points each for their 3-way tie for 2nd.

Week 34 - Buick Championship - Playing together, Woody Austin and Tim Herron each managed 4-under scores of 66 while none of the players above, or tied with them going into the final round, were able to break par the last day. Austin eventually prevailed in a playoff against Herron to gain 137.62 points for the win, while Herron earned 82.57 for 2nd place.

Criteria for Golf Rank Index - Player of the Month

The Golf Rank Index (GRI) - Player of the Month is determined by totaling GRI ranking points earned in all GRI ranked professional golf events scheduled within a months time frame. Events that bridge a months end or beginning of another, are generally placed in the month in which they end, but may be shifted to the prior month to balance the number of events to be ranked in each month. In the event of a first place tie, co-winners will be named.

Eligibility - All players participating in GRI ranked events are eligible. They do not need to be a member of any professional golf tour.

Must Win - To be named a player of the month, the player MUST have a win in a GRI ranked event in the month. Should any player without a win earn the highest number of GRI ranking points for a given month, the player will be placed behind the highest ranked player with a win.
