How do you describe a player with only two top-10 finishes in his PGA Tour playing career? In the case of Todd Hamilton you describe him as a two-time winner and "Champion Golfer of the Year". Hamilton earned those accolades by following up his Honda Classic victory earlier this year with a stunning victory at the British Open.

With his British Open win, Hamilton also wins the GRI July 2004 Player of the Month race. Hamilton had the race locked up last week with the months last event, the Buick Open, still to play. Vijay Singh was the winner at the Buick, but it was only enough to move him into 2nd place.

Ernie Els fell to the #3 spot with 240 July points, all earned for his runner-up finish at the British Open. Mark Hensby, winner of the John Deere Classic is #4 on the list with a 234.57 total while Open Championship 3rd place finisher, Phil Mickelson finished July at #5 with 200 points. Cialas Western Open winner, Stephen Ames is #6 with 196.28.

Overview of May GRI rated events:

Week 26 - Cialas Western Open - Stephen Ames notches his first PGA Tour victory and earns 196.28 ranking points for the effort. Steve Lowery earns 117.77 points for solo 2nd while Luke Donald and Mark Hensby earn 88.37 points each for their 3rd place tie.

Week 27 - John Deere Classic - Mark Hensby earned 146.24 points for his playoff win while runner-up John E. Morgan earned 87.74 and 3rd place finisher Jose Coceres earned 73.12 points. Four players earned 39.85 points apiece for their 4th place tie including Vijay Singh, Joel Kribel, Greg Chalmers and Steve Stricker.

Week 28 - British Open - Todd Hamilton takes the July lead with a gutsy playoff win over Ernie Els. Hamilton earns 400 points for the effort while Els gains 240 for 2nd and Phil Mickelson gains 200 for 3rd.

Week 28a - B.C. Open - A light field playing opposite the Open, but a big win for Jonathan Byrd nevertheless. Byrd earns 109.34 for the win, Ted Purdy earns 65.60 for 2nd while Notah Begay III, Todd Fischer, Robin Freeman and Hidemichi Tanaka earn 38.27 points apiece for a 4-way tie for 3rd.

Week 29 - U.S. Bank Championship in Milwaukee - Carlos Franco earns 133.33 points for the win, with Fred Funk and Brett Quigley earning 73.32 points apiece for their tie for 2nd.

Week 30 - Buick Open - A medium quality field, but most all of the top players participating were on the first page of the leader board throughout the weekend making for an exciting event. Vijay Singh came away with the victory worth 184.66 points followed by John Daly who earned 110.80 for his 2nd place finish. Tiger Woods and Carlos Franco tied for 3rd place earning 83.10 points apiece.

Criteria for Golf Rank Index - Player of the Month

The Golf Rank Index (GRI) - Player of the Month is determined by totaling GRI ranking points earned in all GRI ranked professional golf events scheduled within a months time frame. Events that bridge a months end or beginning of another, are generally placed in the month in which they end, but may be shifted to the prior month to balance the number of events to be ranked in each month. In the event of a first place tie, co-winners will be named.

Eligibility - All players participating in GRI ranked events are eligible. They do not need to be a member of any professional golf tour.

Must Win - To be named a player of the month, the player MUST have a win in a GRI ranked event in the month. Should any player without a win earn the highest number of GRI ranking points for a given month, the player will be placed behind the highest ranked player with a win.
