Even with the Booz Allen Classic yet to be contested the top-3 positions on the GRI 2004 June Player of the Month Index were set. Retief Goosen wrapped up the June title with his U.S. Open victory, while Ernie Els and Sergio Garcia had secured the next two spots. Goosen's steady performance in the daunting final round conditions of the U.S. Open led to his 2nd U.S. Open victory and the insurmountable lead for the June title. The 400 ranking points earned for the U.S. Open win alone was enough to claim June honors but Goosen also earned 47+ points earlier in the Memorial to total 447.32 for the month.

Ernie Els, winner of the Memorial finished in 2nd place for the month with 398.71 points. Starting the U.S. Open final round only one shot behind Goosen, Els looked like he might be able to add a 2nd win for the month with a U.S. Open victory. However a score of 80 put an end to those hopes.

Buick Classic winner and #3 Sergio Garcia, finished his June effort with a tie for 20th at the U.S. Open gaining and additional 58 points to total 321.11. #4 Phil Mickelson added 240 points for his U.S. Open 2nd place finish and a June total of 258.35.

Adam Scott became the 4th winner for the month claiming the Booz Allen Classic by a 4-shot margin over Charles Howell III. However, since Scott had not previously earned points in the month and with the Booz Allen victory worth only 159.98 points, the 9th position was the best he could do.

Overview of May GRI rated events:

Week 22 - The Memorial Tournament - Ernie Els outdistanced the field by 4 shots to earn 278.36 ranking points. Fred Couples turned in four solid rounds in the 60s to finish second and earn 167.02 points. Tiger Woods finished 3rd with 139.18 points, followed by 4th place finisher Justin Rose (111.34 points) and #5 K.J. Choi with 83.51 points.

Week 23 - Buick Classic - Sergio Garcia claimed his second win of the season (first at the EDS) with another 3-way playoff. The victory was worth 262.18 ranking points. Rory Sabbatini and Padraig Harrington lost the playoff but still collected 122.35 points each for their 2nd place tie.

Week 24 - U.S. Open - The second of the season's four majors was worth 400 GRI ranking points to winner, Retief Goosen. Phil Mickelson gained 240 points for 2nd place while Jeff Maggert gained 200 points for solo 3rd. Mike Weir and Shigeki Maruyama earned 150 points each for their 4th place tie.

Week 25 - Booz Allen Classic - Known since 1968 as the Kemper Open then last year as the FBR Capital Open, this event featured a low field strength rating yielding only 159.98 points for winner Adam Scott. Charles Howell III, picked up 95.99 points for 2nd, while defending champion Rory Sabbatini made a very respectable showing by finishing 3rd and earning 79.99 points.

Criteria for Golf Rank Index - Player of the Month

The Golf Rank Index (GRI) - Player of the Month is determined by totaling GRI ranking points earned in all GRI ranked professional golf events scheduled within a months time frame. Events that bridge a months end or beginning of another, are generally placed in the month in which they end, but may be shifted to the prior month to balance the number of events to be ranked in each month. In the event of a first place tie, co-winners will be named.

Eligibility - All players participating in GRI ranked events are eligible. They do not need to be a member of any professional golf tour.

Must Win - To be named a player of the month, the player MUST have a win in a GRI ranked event in the month. Should any player without a win earn the highest number of GRI ranking points for a given month, the player will be placed behind the highest ranked player with a win.
