| Steve Flesch Claims GRI May 2004 Player of the Month Sindelar 2nd, Garcia 3rd, Woods 4th, Toms 5th (May 31, 2004 - Golf Rank Index)
The other players with May wins were Sergio Garcia at Colonial and David Toms at the FedEx St. Jude. Garcia's win was enough to nail down the #3 spot with 236.86 points but Tom's win was not enough to surpass Tiger Woods for the 4th spot. While Toms' 6-stroke victory in Memphis was certainly impressive, unfortunately the FedEx event could only muster 12 of the top-50 QPI rated players and thus was worth only 147+ points for Toms. Woods on the other hand did not have a victory in the month, but did post a T3 at the Wachovia and a T4 at the EDS for a monthly total of 180.17 As it turns out Flesch had the May Player of the Month wrapped even before the months last event in Memphis was contested. Going into the last week Flesch had a lead of 152+ points over then #8 Robert Damron, the only contender participating in the FedEx. Even a victory by Damron, who ended up finishing in a tie for 41st, wouldn't have been enough to surpass Flesch for the lead. Flesch becomes the 5th different player to win a Player of the Month for the season. Previous winners were Jonathan Kaye in January, Tiger Woods in February, Adam Scott in March and Phil Mickelson in April. Overview of May GRI rated events: Week 18 - Wachovia Championship - Surprise winner Joey Sindelar earns 242.48 points for the win while playoff loser Aaron Oberholser gains 145.49. Tiger Woods and Carlos Franco earn 109.12 apiece for a third place tie. Mickelson, Flesch, Maggert & Begay earn 52.74 for their 5th place tie. Week 19 - EDS Byron Nelson Championship - Sergio Garcia held off Robert Damron and Dudley Hart to claim a playoff victory and earn 236.86 GRI ranking points. Damron and Hart earn 130.27 points apiece for their second place effort. Tim Herron, Duffy Waldorf and Tiger Woods each earn 71.06 points for their 4th place tie. Week 20 - Bank of America Colonial - Steve Flesch held off 3rd round co-leader Chad Campbell to win by one stroke. Flesch earns 229.36 points for the win and all but locks up May Player of the Month. Campbell earns 137.62 for 2nd, Stephen Ames earns 114.68 for 3rd and Craig Perks earns 91.74 for 4th. Week 21 - FedEx St. Jude Classic - David Toms became the 4th player in the 2004 campaign to successfully defend a title when he prevailed by 6 strokes. Toms earns 147.98 points for the win while Bob Estes earns 88.79 points for 2nd and Steve Lowery and Tim Herron earn 66.59 points apiece for their 3rd place tie. Below are May Player of the Month totals for the top-24 and ties. Criteria for Golf Rank Index - Player of the Month The Golf Rank Index (GRI) - Player of the Month is determined by totaling GRI ranking points earned in all GRI ranked professional golf events scheduled within a months time frame. Events that bridge a months end or beginning of another, are generally placed in the month in which they end, but may be shifted to the prior month to balance the number of events to be ranked in each month. In the event of a first place tie, co-winners will be named. Eligibility - All players participating in GRI ranked events are eligible. They do not need to be a member of any professional golf tour. Must Win - To be named a player of the month, the player MUST have a win in a GRI ranked event in the month. Should any player without a win earn the highest number of GRI ranking points for a given month, the player will be placed behind the highest ranked player with a win. |
