Phil Mickelson's first major championship victory at The Masters along with a T2 finish at the month ending HP Classic, was enough to hold off April's two-time winner, Vijay Singh, for the GRI April, 2004 Player of the Month. Mickelson's final April total was 526.53 compared to 465.94 for Singh.

The key to Mickelson taking the April honors was the differing point values available to the winner in each event. Each of the four major championships are worth a guaranteed 400 GRI ranking points to the winner while each of the "regular" tour events are rated by the strength of the field participating in the event. While Singh's back-to-back victories in successive weeks in Houston and New Orleans are impressive, both of them were in events featuring relatively weak fields. Both of Singh's victories were worth a combined total of only 357+ GRI ranking points compared to the 400 ranking points Mickelson earned for his single major victory.

In April, June, July & August, the four months of the year that feature a GRI point rich major championship, usually the winner of the major will also win the monthly honor. This April was no exception but it should be noted that in addition to his Masters victory, Mickelson's still needed his tie for 2nd at the HP Classic to prevail in the April index.

Since the GRI Player of the Month indices were introduced in January 2003, Singh becomes the first "hard luck" player to win twice in a single month yet fail to win the monthly title.

Overview of April GRI rated events:

Week 13 - Bell South Classic - Zach Johnson wins in only his 9th event since gaining exempt status via his Nationwide Player of the Year crown in 2003. Johnson earned 172.00 points for the victory followed by Mark Hensby with 103.20, Scott Hend with 86.00 and Padraig Harrington with 68.80.

Week 14 - The Masters - The first of 4 majors… 400 ranking points to Phil Mickelson for his exciting win. Runner-up Ernie Els earns 240 points while 3rd place finisher K.J. Choi earned 200 points. Sergio Garcia and Bernhard Langer earn 150 points apiece for their 4th place tie.

Week 15 - MCI Heritage - Stewart Cink adds 223+ points for his playoff win over Ted Purdy who earns 133+ points. Ernie Els, Carl Pettersson and Patrick Sheehan add 89+ points apiece for their 3rd place tie. Cink becomes the 15th winner out of 16 events for the '04.

Week 16 - Shell Houston Open - On paper, Vijay Singh looked like the class of this relatively weak field before the tournament began. It didn't look good after an opening round 74, but Singh finished strong down the stretch for an eventual 2-stroke victory over Scott Hoch. Singh earns 177+ points for the victory, Hoch 106+ for 2nd while John Huston nailed down 88+ points for 3rd.

Week 17 - HP Classic of New Orleans - Vijay Singh fired a 4th round 63, which included a sizzling back-nine 29, to record his second consecutive victory and earn 180+ GRI ranking points. The overall field rating of 180 was one of the bottom-5 for the year thus far, despite featuring Phil Mickelson who was on hand to finish in a tie for 2nd with Joe Ogilvie. Each of the second place finishers earned 99+ points

Criteria for Golf Rank Index - Player of the Month

The Golf Rank Index (GRI) - Player of the Month is determined by totaling GRI ranking points earned in all GRI ranked professional golf events scheduled within a months time frame. Events that bridge a months end or beginning of another, are generally placed in the month in which they end, but may be shifted to the prior month to balance the number of events to be ranked in each month. In the event of a first place tie, co-winners will be named.

Eligibility - All players participating in GRI ranked events are eligible. They do not need to be a member of any professional golf tour.

Must Win - To be named a player of the month, the player MUST have a win in a GRI ranked event in the month. Should any player without a win earn the highest number of GRI ranking points for a given month, the player will be placed behind the highest ranked player with a win.
