A victory and 320 GRI ranking points earned at the Players Championship was enough by itself to earn Adam Scott the GRI March, 2004 Player of the Month. Add to it the 120+ points he earned for his tie for 3rd at Bay Hill and Scott wins the March race by a landslide. The 440+ points earned by Scott were the most by any monthly winner since Tiger Wood's 479 earned in February of 2003.

142+ points behind Scott was last week's leader Chad Campbell. In his first trip to Sawgrass, Campbell failed to finish in the top 30 thus earning no points for the last week of the month. On the other hand, Craig Parry moved up one spot to 3rd place on the final list by earning 54+ points for his 3rd place finish at the Players, bringing him up to a total of 252+ for the month.

#4 Scott Verplank and #5 Todd Hamilton were each pushed down two spots due to being passed by Scott and Parry, but they each still had very respectable totals of 245+ and 218+ points respectively.

A quick overview of March GRI rated events:

Week 9 - Ford Championship at Doral - Craig Parry wins the event with unquestionably the best shot of the year thus far. Parry holed his 6-iron approach in the first playoff hole on the 18th on the Blue Monster. Parry earned 197+ points for the victory, while his "miracle" shot victim, Scott Verplank, followed with 118+ for 2nd place. Retief Goosen was 3rd with 98+ points.

Week 10 - The Honda Classic - Todd Hamilton played an indifferent first 16 holes on Sunday but birdied the last two to edge Davis Love III and earn 197+ points with a victory. Love earned 118+ for his 2nd place effort while Brian Bateman nailed down 3rd place and 98+ points. Defending champion Justin Leonard and last weeks champion Craig Parry failed to gain GRI ranking points by finishing out of the top-25.

Week 11 - Bay Hill Invitational Presented by MasterCard - Chad Campbell's victory was worth 266+ ranking points, the most of any "regular" event this year. Stuart Appleby earned 160+ points for 2nd and Scott Verplank earned 120+ points for his 3rd place finish. In a major surprise Tiger Woods failed to defend his 4 consecutive Bay Hill victories by finishing in a tie for 46th.

Week 12 - The Players Championship - Adam Scott earned 320 ranking points by saving bogey after near disaster on the 72nd hole. Commonly referred to as the "5th major", this premier event played on the TPC Stadium Course at Sawgrass is usually one of the most entertaining of any year and '04 was no exception. Padraig Harrington finished 2nd for the second straight year earning 192 points for the effort, while Kenny Perry, Phil Mickelson and Frank Lickliter II finished tied for 3rd, earning 133+ points each.

Criteria for Golf Rank Index - Player of the Month

The Golf Rank Index (GRI) - Player of the Month is determined by totaling GRI ranking points earned in all GRI ranked professional golf events scheduled within a months time frame. Events that bridge a months end or beginning of another, are generally placed in the month in which they end, but may be shifted to the prior month to balance the number of events to be ranked in each month. In the event of a first place tie, co-winners will be named.

Eligibility - All players participating in GRI ranked events are eligible. They do not need to be a member of any professional golf tour.

Must Win - To be named a player of the month, the player MUST have a win in a GRI ranked event in the month. Should any player without a win earn the highest number of GRI ranking points for a given month, they will be placed behind the highest ranked player with a win.
