| Tiger Woods Rallies to Win GRI - February 2004 Player of the Month Race Weir 2nd Daly to 3rd (March 1, 2004 - Golf Rank Index)
Mike Weir and Vijay Singh provided the most help to Woods by exiting the WGC Match with early 2nd round eliminations while Shigeki Maruyama failed to win a single match. Next to Love, Phil Mickelson offered the best fight by making the quarter-finals of the Match Play, but it was not enough to hold off Woods. Going into this week, John Daly held the lead for February honors but had to win the Chrysler Classic of Tucson to hold onto his lead. Daly looked up to the challenge after the first day, but a lost ball mishap on Friday followed by poor play over the weekend dashed his hopes. There were 5 GRI ranked events for February, but a player could play in a maximum of 4 as the Chrysler Classic at Tucson was held opposite the WGC-Accenture Match Play in week 8. A quick overview of the month's events: AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am - Vijay Singh collected 173+ GRI ranking points for his win, followed by Jeff Maggert with 104+ and Phil Mickelson with 86+. The event had the lowest field strength of the year thus far (until Tucson) which means fewer points to the winner, but a solid win for Singh never the less. Buick Invitational - John Daly gained 212+ points for his victory at the Buick Invitational. Daly held on to win in a playoff over Chris Riley and Luke Donald who each earned 117.13 points for their 2nd place efforts. Phil Mickelson followed with another top-10 finish and 51.11 ranking points for his effort Nissan Open - Mike Weir successfully defended his title at Riviera Country Club, which usually boasts one of the strongest "regular" tour fields of the year. 41 of the top 50 GRI ranked players participated to help Weir earn 266+ points for his first place finish. Shigeki Maruyama earned 159+ for 2nd and Stuart Appleby earned 133+ for 3rd. WGC-Accenture Match Play - In the first of the "BIG-9" events of the year, Tiger Woods gave the rest of the contenders a reminder of just who owns the WGC's. Woods successfully defended his 2003 crown and added to his astonishing record at WGC events by notching his 8th win out of the 14 individual events in which he has participated. Davis Love III fell short in his challenge to Woods, but did pick up a hefty 180 ranking points for his 2nd place effort. Chrysler Classic of Tucson - Playing opposite the WGC, the Tucson event was worth only 117+ ranking points, but Heath Slocum didn't mind a bit as his career received a major boost with his first tour victory. Aaron Baddeley hit the charts with a solo second place finish worth 70+ ranking points Below are the Top-40 on the GRI February 2004 Player of the Month chart... Criteria for Golf Rank Index - Player of the Month The Golf Rank Index (GRI) - Player of the Month is determined by totaling GRI ranking points earned in all GRI ranked professional golf events scheduled within a months time frame. Events that bridge a months end or beginning of another, are generally placed in the month in which they end, but may be shifted to the prior month to balance the number of events to be ranked in each month. In the event of a first place tie, co-winners will be named. Eligibility - All players participating in GRI ranked events are eligible. They do not need to be a member of any professional golf tour. Must Win - To be named a player of the month, the player MUST have a win in a GRI ranked event in the month. Should any player without a win earn the highest number of GRI ranking points for a given month, they will be placed behind the highest ranked player with a win. |
