| Jonathan Kaye Wins FBR & GRI -
January 2004 Player of the Month Vijay Singh to 2nd Mickelson Drops to 3rd, Els to 4th (February 2, 2004 - Golf Rank Index)
The 252+ GRI ranking points earned for the FBR victory along with the 115+ points earned in his earlier strong finishes gave him a January total of over 367 points, more than 100 points above his nearest rival, Vijay Singh. Singh finished 2nd on the January chart without a victory, but his 2nd at the Mercedes, his 3rd place finish at the FBR along with another top 10 finish in the Sony Open was enough to move him past the other January winners. Here is a brief recap of the 4 events that make up the GRI - January, 2004 Player of the Month index. Mercedes Championship - Stuart Appleby started the month strong with the victory, followed closely by Singh and Darren Clarke. Appleby gained 205+ GRI ranking points for his victory, but failed to make the cut or points at the Sony, his only other event for the month. Sony Open in Hawaii - Ernie Els successfully defended last year's victory at the Sony and picked up 214+ GRI ranking points in the progress. Harrison Frazar and Davis Love III finished 2nd and 3rd respectively. Els held the lead on the January chart at the end of the 2nd week, and held it through the 3rd week as well despite the fact that he did not play in week 3 or 4. Bob Hope Chrysler Classic - Phil Mickelson brushed off any suggestion that his 2004 season would be a repeat of his disappointing 2003 performance. Mickelson won the Hope in a playoff over Skip Kendall and gained 216+ GRI ranking points. Kendall earned 129+ points for his 2nd place finish and Haas rounded out the top 3 with 108+ points. FBR Open - As previously mentioned Jonathan Kaye came away victorious not only in the tournament but on the January GRI index as well. Phil Mickelson did give Kaye more than a little help in gaining the top honors for the month however, as he suffered a disastrous back-nine on Sunday to fall all the way from 1st to a tie for 7th. A solo 2nd place finish would have been enough for Mickelson to top the January Index. Below are the final standings for the GRI - January 2004, Player of the Month. (50 points or more)
Criteria for Golf Rank Index - Player of the Month The Golf Rank Index (GRI) - Player of the Month is determined by totaling GRI ranking points earned in all GRI ranked professional golf events scheduled within a months time frame. Events that bridge a months end or beginning of another, are generally placed in the month in which they end, but may be shifted to the prior month to balance the number of events to be ranked in each month. In the event of a first place tie, co-winners will be named. Eligibility - All players participating in GRI ranked events are eligible. They do not need to be a member of any professional golf tour. Must Win - To be named a player of the month, the player MUST have a win in a GRI ranked event in the month. Should any player without a win earn the highest number of GRI ranking points for a given month, they will be placed behind the highest ranked player with a win. |
