How the GRI 2003 Ranking Points Were Calculated

Note: (The rankings methods were adjusted slightly starting January 2004 to better reflect strength of field differences from event to event. The fixed point allocations for the Players Championship was raised 5%, the three ranked WGC events and Tour Championship are now ranked equally. Additionally, regular tour events with better fields are now awarded higher point values. The changes made for 2004 would not have affected the top placings for the GRI 2003 Cumulative, Quality, or Majors indicies.) See the current ranking methods.

The Golf Rank Index uses two main factors in calculating ranking points The first is order of finish points and the second is a tournament value for each of the tournaments.

Order of Finish Points (OFP)

Order of Finish Points are awarded to a player based on his order of finish in a tournament. 100 points for 1st, 60 points for 2nd, 50 points for 3rd, all the way down to 1 point for 25th place. No points are awarded for a finish below a tie for 25th. Should two or more players tie for a position, the points are split. (Example: For a two-way tie for 2nd we would use the following formula (50 + 60) / 2 = 55)

The Tournament Value (TV)

The purpose of having a Tournament Value is the recognition that not all tournaments are equal in importance or have the same strength of field. A win or high finish in any of the majors, the Players Championship, The Tour Championship or other tournaments with strong fields are worth more value than a tournament with a weak field.

The four majors plus the PGA and Tour Championship are rated separately from the other 42 tournaments. The Masters, U.S. Open, The Open Championship, and the PGA Championship are assigned a Tournament Value of 4.0 The Players Championship is assigned a value of 3.0 and the season ending Tour Championship is assigned a value of 2.5

All the other tournaments are assigned a Tournament Value by assessing the strength of the field based on how many of the top 50 players in the world are in the field and their ranking at the time. The top ranked player in the world receives a higher value than the 2nd, etc... down to the 50th top ranked player.

The Order of Finish points for a player are then multiplied by the Tournament Value to arrive at an adjusted point value earned for the tournament. The highest point value that can be earned is 400 points for a first place finish in any of the four majors. The Player Championship follows with a winning point value of 300 and the Tour Championship winner is guaranteed 250 points. If a regular tour event or a WGC event should attract all of the top 50 players in the world, those events could be worth 250 points to the winner as well. A minimum of 100 points is awarded in all tournaments.

The Tournament Values for all tournaments are below.
