Tiger Woods narrowly won the 2003 Golf Rank Index - Player of the Year, but it took a head-to-head comparison with Vijay Singh to determine the winner.

Vijay Singh finished on top of the GRI - Cumulative Performance index, outdistancing Woods by 215 GRI ranking points. The Cumulative Index measures total performance for the entire season.

Tiger Woods easily outdistanced Singh on the GRI - Event Average Performance Index, which averages how well a player performs in each event in which he participates.

Since neither player won a Major Championship, to determine which player would be named the GRI - Player of the Year a head-to-head comparison of how each performed in common events was made. Due to injuries and schedule differences, it wasn't until the 11th week of the season until Woods and Singh squared off in the same event, the Bay Hill Invitational. Despite the late start in their season long duel, they still managed to participate in 15 common events.

Here is how they compared in the 15 common events in which they played.
  • Woods finished higher than Singh 7 times, while Singh prevailed 6 times, and they tied in the same position twice.
  • Singh was better in the majors, (although neither player had a win) but Woods was better in the WGC's and other events.
  • Woods won 3 times with Singh in the field, and Singh won one event with Woods in the field.
  • Woods had 8 top-5 finishes to Singh's 6
  • Woods and Singh tied with 9 top-10's each, and 13 top 25's each.

But in the end... it comes down to the GRI ranking points earned in common events. This is how they stacked up:

Criteria for Golf Rank Index - Player of the Year

The Golf Rank Index (GRI) - Player of the Year Index is awarded to the player who finishes the season #1 on the GRI - Cumulative Performance and the GRI - Quality Index
Tie Breakers:
  • If different players finish at the top of each index, the player who wins the most Major Championships (Masters, U.S. Open, British, PGA) is the GRI - Player of the Year.

  • If the players win the same amount of majors, then the higher ranked player on the GRI - Major Championship Index is the GRI - Player of the year.

  • If neither player wins a Major Championship, then a head-to-head, GRI Ranking cummulative points comparison of both players performance in COMMON EVENTS will determine the GRI - Player of the Year.
