Mike Weir's win at the Masters along with a tie for 4th at the U.S. Open and a tie for 7th at the PGA was more than enough to win the Golf Rank Index - 2003 Major Championship Player of the Year. Weir's first ever major victory at the Masters gave him 400 index points and an early lead that he would never relinquish. Weir's 28th place at the British Open was his lowest finish in the four majors which wasn't bad considering the "hit and hope" conditions at Royal St. George.

Jim Furyk started his major campaign with a solid 4th place finish at The Masters then claimed the first major of his career with a solid win at the U.S. Open. Furyk missed the cut at the British Open but followed up with a tie for 18th at the PGA Championship.

Ben Curtis was not eligible for The Masters or U.S. Open, used his 17th place finish at the Western Open to qualify for the British Open. Given virtually no chance by the media and most golf fans, Curtis steadily fought back the challenges from some of the biggest names in golf, including Woods, Love & Singh, to finish victorious at -1, the only player under par.

Shuan Micheel must have been inspired by what he saw at the British, as he emerged another surprise major victor with his win at the PGA Championship. Micheel was not eligible for the years first three majors, but made the most of his one opportunity at the PGA holding off Chad Campbell to win by two.

The winners of the 4 majors claimed the top spots on the index, but Vijay Singh, Ernie Els, and Kenny Perry also finished well. Singh earned top-25 index points in 3 majors, his best finish being at the British Open. Kenny Perry had 3 top-10 finishes including a 3rd place finish in the U.S. Open and Ernie Els was the only player to earn top-25 index points in all 4 of the majors.

Criteria for Golf Rank Index - Major Championship Player of the Year

The Golf Rank Index (GRI) - Major Championship Player of the Year is determined by totaling GRI ranking points earned in four majors championships. (The Masters, U.S. Open, British Open, PGA)

Must Win - To be named Major Championship Player of the Year, a player MUST have at least one win in one of the 4 major championships. Regardless of how many points earned, any player without a win will be placed behind ALL players with a win. In the event of a first place tie, co-winners will be named.

Eligibility - All players participating in any of the 4 majors are eligible. They do not need to be a member of any professional golf tour.
