July 2003 Player of the Month
Ben Curtis Wins GRI - July 2003 Player of the Month

• Woods, Perry, Stadler, Jacobsen Have July Wins

(July 28, 2003 - Golf Rank Index)

His British Open win earns Ben Curtis the Golf Rank Index - July Player of the Month. A small wager on Ben Curtis to win The Open Championship (British) could have won a bettor a fortune as this 500-1 long shot went on to hoist the Claret Jug. Prior to the start of the tournament, Curtis was hardly given a chance by anyone. The quirky layout of Royal St. George's Golf Club frustrated most of the games best, but somehow this, most unlikely of champions, was able to manage his game and his emotions long enough to hold on for the win.

Somehow, Curtis managed to avoid the quirky bounces that claimed other contenders from start to finish in this tournament. For instance; Tiger Woods lost a ball on his very first shot of the tournament, taking a triple bogey, and Thomas Bjorn took 3 shots to get out of a bunker on his 71st hole to lose the tournament.

The bottom line… When the top players in the world failed to deal with the course and the adversities it dished out, Curtis stayed steadfast in his determination and his performance. In addition, he held up to the pressure of a major, all necessary ingredients of a deserving champion.

Other events for the month were:

100th Western Open - Tiger Woods made it look easy at the Western Open at Cog Hill. His 267 total was 5 better than runner-up Rich Beem. Mike Weir and Jim Furyk tied for 3rd and Vijay Singh finished at 11th. Woods' Western win was his 4th of the year and made this the 5th consecutive season in which he has posted 4 or more wins.

Greater Milwaukee Open - Kenny Perry needed a birdie putt on the 72nd hole of the GMO to notch his 3rd win of the season. Steve Allan and Heath Slocum finished one stroke back. Perry's 3 wins are the most he has ever won in a single season.

B.C. Open - While most of the worlds top players were at the British Open Craig Stadler made the most of his opportunity, firing a final round 63 to take his first PGA Tour title since 1996. But the big news was that Stadler also won the Ford Senior Players Championship the week before, making him the first Champions Tour player to win on the PGA Tour.

Greater Hartford Open - Peter Jacobsen must have been inspired by Craig Stadler's win at the B.C. the week before. The 49-year-old Jacobsen may have become the tours oldest wire-to-wire winner with his victory at the GHO. Jacobsen was tied with another 40-something, Jay Haas after the first round, but took a one shot lead over Haas after by the end of the second round. He maintained his margin of one through the third round and extended his lead to 2 shots over 2nd place finisher, Chris Riley.

Criteria for Golf Rank Index - Player of the Month

The Golf Rank Index (GRI) - Player of the Month is determined by totaling GRI ranking points earned in all GRI ranked professional golf events scheduled within a months time frame. Events that bridge a months end or beginning of another, are generally placed in the month in which they end, but may be shifted to the prior month to balance the number of events to be ranked in each month. In the event of a first place tie, co-winners will be named.

Eligibility - All players participating in GRI ranked events are eligible. They do not need to be a member of any professional golf tour.

Must Win - To be named a player of the month, the player MUST have a win in a GRI ranked event in the month. Should any player without a win earn the highest number of GRI ranking points for a given month, they will be placed behind the highest ranked player with a win.
