| Jim Furyk Wins GRI June 2003
Player of the Month Sabbatini, Kaye & Toms With June Victories (June 30, 2003 - Golf Rank Index) With a win at the 2003 U. S.
Open, Jim Furyk removed himself from the ranks of those considered "best
players not to have won a major" and won the Golf Rank Index - June Player
of the Month. Furyk gained his major victory in the same fashion in which
he has been well known on tour for years
determined consistency. Furyk
gained a share of the 36-hole lead with Vijay Singh, then lead by three after 3
rounds eventually winning by 3 shots over Stephen Leaney. The victory was
Furyk's 11th top ten finish on tour this year. FBR Capital Open - Rory Sabbatini shot 4 rounds in the 60's (68, 66, 68, 68) to post his second career PGA Tour win over Fred Funk, Duffy Waldorf, and Joe Durant. Sabbatini's final margin of victory was 3 shots even though he had to finish with the pressure of a 1-stroke lead. It was only after play was concluded that Duffy Waldorf was assessed a 2 stroke penalty for tapping down some grass that may have been on his line on the 12th hole. The penalty put Waldorf three shots behind, instead of one and in a 3-way tie for 2nd instead of second alone. U.S. Open - As previously mentioned, Furyk was the winner, but other strong performances were turned in by Stephen Leaney (2nd), Mike Weir and Kenny Perry (T-3), and Ernie Els & David Toms (T-5). Noticeably absent from the top of the leader board were Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Davis Love III. Woods finished tied for 20th with Vijay Singh, Mickelson finished tied for 55th, and Love missed the cut. Buick Classic - Jonathan Kaye notched his first PGA Tour victory with a playoff win over John Rollins. Kaye won the 1-hole playoff in grand style; draining a 13 foot put for eagle. Other notables in the field included Fred Funk (T-4), Sergio Garcia (T-4), Ernie Els (T-11) and Tiger Woods (T-13). FedEx - St. Jude Classic - David Toms won his second event in two months with his 3 shot victory over Nick Price at the FedEx. Toms was one of 6 players in the field to post 4 rounds in the 60's but his 4th round 64 was more than enough to propel him to the top. Nick Price was making his own serious run at the title until he dropped his approach to the 72nd hole into the water. Despite the bogey on the final hole, Price still shot 62, tying his career best on tour. Detailed Top 13 GRI - June Player of the Month standings below...
Criteria for Golf Rank Index - Player of the Month The Golf Rank Index (GRI) - Player of the Month is determined by totaling GRI ranking points earned in all GRI ranked professional golf events scheduled within a months time frame. Events that bridge a months end or beginning of another, are generally placed in the month in which they end, but may be shifted to the prior month to balance the number of events to be ranked in each month. In the event of a first place tie, co-winners will be named. Eligibility - All players participating in GRI ranked events are eligible. They do not need to be a member of any professional golf tour. Must Win - To be named a player of the month, the player MUST have a win in a GRI ranked event in the month. Should any player without a win earn the highest number of GRI ranking points for a given month, they will be placed behind the highest ranked player with a win. |
