Kenny Perry Wins GRI May 2003 Player of the Month

• Perry Wins Twice
• May Winners Include Singh, Toms & Flesch

(June 2, 2003 - Golf Rank Index)

Impressive back-to-back victories at the Bank of America Colonial and the Memorial tournament earned Kenny Perry the Golf Rank Index - May Player of the Month. For the first two rounds at Colonial, hardly anyone even knew Perry was in the tournament because all eyes were on the historic appearance of Annika Sörenstam. Perry, the co-leader after Friday's play, made everyone notice on Saturday when he went out and blitzed the course, and the rest of the field, with a 61 to take a 9 shot lead into Sunday. Justin Leonard's Sunday 61 was only enough for a second place finish, 6 shots back.

Perry followed up his great week at Colonial with his second win in a row at the Memorial. Building up another huge lead after Sunday's front nine, Perry, admittedly "ran out of gas", made bogey 5 of his last 6 holes, but still had enough to win by 2 over Lee Janzen. 3rd place went to Mike Weir, 3 shots back of the winner. Tiger Woods and Vijay Singh tied for 4th, 4 shots behind Perry.

Despite Perry's two wins, Vijay Singh almost nosed Perry out for the May Player of the Month honor, finishing a mere 3 points behind. Singh won the EDS Byron Nelson Championship, finished tied for 2nd in the Wachovia Championship, and tied for 11th at the HP Classic of New Orleans. Adding in Singh's 4th place finish at the Colonial, which makes it a win and two additional top 5's for the month.

Had Vijay Singh known that David Toms was going to score a quadruple bogey on his final hole at the Wachovia, he might have pressed a little harder coming down the stretch. Trailing Toms by 4 shots at the time, Singh made a double bogey at the par-3 17th to fall 6 shots back. Toms played magnificently all week, and despite the debacle at the last, held on to win by 2 shots over Singh, Robert Gamez and Brent Geiberger.

Steve Flesch was the other winner for the month, recording his first career victory at the HP Classic of New Orleans. Flesch started the day 7 back of leader Scott Verplank but battled windy conditions to a closing round 65 and a playoff spot with Bob Estes. Flesch, on the green in regulation on the first playoff hole, but outside of Estes, rolled in a birdie, then watched as Estes birdie effort slid by.

Criteria for Golf Rank Index - Player of the Month

The Golf Rank Index (GRI) - Player of the Month is determined by totaling GRI ranking points earned in all GRI ranked professional golf events scheduled within a months time frame. Events that bridge a months end or beginning of another, are generally placed in the month in which they end, but may be shifted to the prior month to balance the number of events to be ranked in each month. In the event of a first place tie, co-winners will be named.

Eligibility - All players participating in GRI ranked events are eligible. They do not need to be a member of any professional golf tour.

Must Win - To be named a player of the month, the player MUST have a win in a GRI ranked event in the month. Should any player without a win earn the highest number of GRI ranking points for a given month, they will be placed behind the highest ranked player with a win.
