| Mike Weir Wins GRI April 2003
Player of the Month Crane, Love & Hoch Add Victories (April 28, 2003 - Golf Rank Index) Mike
Weir's win at The Masters along with the 400 GRI index points earned for
the victory, were enough for Weir to emerge as the winner of the Golf Rank
Index - April Player of the Month. While some casual fans may have been
surprised to see Weir perform so well under pressure, tour players and close
observers of the tour were not as he has quietly become one of the best players
on the circuit. With 2 wins already under his belt for the year, the Bob Hope
Chrysler Classic, along with a playoff win at the Nissan Open, Weir was primed
and ready to become the first Canadian to win a major championship. At Augusta, Weir brushed off a 3rd round 75 to shoot 68 in the final round, then prevailed in a 1-hole playoff over Len Mattice. Mattice earned his way to 2nd place on the GRI - April chart by shooting the tournaments low round of 65 to earn his spot in the playoff, and 240 GRI index points. . Other event winners for the month include Davis Love III, with his 5th career victory at the MCI Heritage. Love joins Tiger Woods and Mike Weir as the only 3 time winners on the tour this year. Love's MCI victory at Harbour Town was anything but routine, as he needed to hole a chip from 60-plus feet on the 72nd hole to gain a spot in what would be a 4-hole playoff with Woody Austin. Austin missed golden opportunities for victory by failing to hole putts of 7 and 3 feet at the 2nd and 3rd playoff holes. Ben Crane in winning his first ever tour event by 4 shots over Bob Tway at the Bell South Classic, became the only first time winner on tour this season. Crane's final hole eagle at the par-5 18th was just the icing on his final two rounds of 64 and 63. His 127 weekend total, was the lowest on tour this year. Freddy Freddy Freddy was the chant as Fred Couples enjoyed his 4-shot victory march on the 72nd hold of the Shell Houston Open. His win at Houston was the first for Couples in 5 years, and the tearful champion, and former University of Houston golfer, could hardly contain himself when his final putt fell into the hole. Criteria for Golf Rank Index - Player of the Month The Golf Rank Index (GRI) - Player of the Month is determined by totaling GRI ranking points earned in all GRI ranked professional golf events scheduled within a months time frame. Events that bridge a months end or beginning of another, are generally placed in the month in which they end, but may be shifted to the prior month to balance the number of events to be ranked in each month. In the event of a first place tie, co-winners will be named. Eligibility - All players participating in GRI ranked events are eligible. They do not need to be a member of any professional golf tour. Must Win - To be named a player of the month, the player MUST have a win in a GRI ranked event in the month. Should any player without a win earn the highest number of GRI ranking points for a given month, they will be placed behind the highest ranked player with a win. |
