Davis Love III is Golf Rank Index March 2003 Player of the Month

• Woods, Hoch & Leonard Add Victories

(April 1, 2003 - Golf Rank Index)

An impressive victory at the The Players Championship was more than enough to earn Davis Love III the Golf Rank Index - March Player of the Month. Love's blistering final round 64 at The Players warmed the hearts of his peers and golf fans alike on the otherwise unseasonably cold and windy day. The victory marked Love's 2nd Players title, and his second victory on tour this year.

Jim Furyk came in 2nd in the GRI standings for the month even without a victory. Furyk suffered a tough 2-day, 3rd hole playoff loss to Scott Hoch at the Ford Championship at Doral, but brushed it off by followed up with a 5th place tie at the Honda Classic, and a 4th place tie at the Players.

Tiger Woods had another solid month, winning his 3rd event of the year at Bay Hill then finishing tied for 11th at The Players in his only other March appearance. While any PGA Tour victory is special, Woods win at Bay Hill was his 4th consecutive at the event, tying a 73-year-old standard for consecutive victories in the same event.

Scott Hoch's playoff win over Furyk at Doral only lasted a mere two days. Hoch and Furyk were on the green at the 2nd playoff hole as darkness was falling quickly around them. Hoch, outside of Furyk and having trouble seeing the line of his putt, used his option to suspend play until the next day, much to the disdain of the remaining crowd. Few fans returned the next morning to witness Hoch vindicated his decision, drain the 10 foot putt then go on to win the 3rd playoff hole, the 18th of the Blue Monster.

The other victory of the month belonged to Justin Leonard at the Honda Classic. The recently married Leonard playing in front of his new in-laws fired a first round 63 to seize early control. Leonard then played solid the rest of the week to finish with a 1-stroke margin over challengers Davis Love III and Chad Campbell. An indifferent back-nine 37 at the Honda is all that kept Love from being a two time winner for the month.

Criteria for Golf Rank Index - Player of the Month

The Golf Rank Index (GRI) - Player of the Month is determined by totaling GRI ranking points earned in all GRI ranked professional golf events scheduled within a months time frame. Events that bridge a months end or beginning of another, are generally placed in the month in which they end, but may be shifted to the prior month to balance the number of events to be ranked in each month. In the event of a first place tie, co-winners will be named.

Eligibility - All players participating in GRI ranked events are eligible. They do not need to be a member of any professional golf tour.

Must Win - To be named a player of the month, the player MUST have a win in a GRI ranked event in the month. Should any player without a win earn the highest number of GRI ranking points for a given month, they will be placed behind the highest ranked player with a win.
