He's Baaaak... With his
dominating play in February, Tiger Woods easily outdistanced the rest of the
field to earn the Golf Rank Index - February Player of the Month.
Any questions about the success of Tiger's recent knee surgery were quickly laid to rest when he skipped in with a convincing 4 shot victory at the Buick Invitational at Torrey Pines, his first his first event of the year. Woods knocked the rust off his game with an opening round of 70, and then proceeded to waltz past the field with rounds of 66, 68 and 68.
The next week at the Nissan Open at Riveria, Wood's play was a bit less stellar until the final round in which he tied the tournament low round of 65, propelling himself to a tie for 5th.
In the month's last event, the WGC - Accenture Match Play, Woods blitzed his first three opponents, then prevailed in a grueling 19-hole semi-final shoot-out with Adam Scott. In the 36-hole final, Woods held the lead from the very first hole but had to fend off a strong comeback effort from David Toms to secure the 2 & 1 victory.
Other winners for the month included Davis Love III at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, Mike Weir 2nd victory of the season at the Nissan Open and Frank Lickliter at the Chrysler Classic of Tucson.
Other notables include Ernie Els who failed to make it 3 straight U.S. victories when he lost his first match in The WGC - Match Play. Charles Howell III also had a good showing in February, mainly due to his 2nd place finish at the Nissan Open.

Criteria for Golf Rank Index - Player of the Month
The Golf Rank Index (GRI) - Player of the Month is determined by totaling GRI ranking points earned in all GRI ranked professional golf events scheduled within a months time frame. Events that bridge a months end or beginning of another, are generally placed in the month in which they end, but may be shifted to the prior month to balance the number of events to be ranked in each month. In the event of a first place tie, co-winners will be named.
Eligibility - All players participating in GRI ranked events are eligible. They do not need to be a member of any professional golf tour.
Must Win - To be named a player of the month, the player MUST have a win in a GRI ranked event in the month. Should any player without a win earn the highest number of GRI ranking points for a given month, they will be placed behind the highest ranked player with a win.
