 Ernie Els celebrated the New Year with a bang!
In the first tournament of the year, the Mercedes Championship, Els dominated
the field with a PGA Tour record -31 under par performance and an 8-stroke
victory over his nearest competitors, K.J. Choi and Rocco Mediate. Apparently
not satisfied with one victory, Els prevailed again the next week at the Sony
Open in Hawaii, beating Aaron Baddeley on the second hole of a playoff. Els
explosive performance earns him the Golf Rank Index - January Player of the
Month.
Perhaps Els could have won more, but after his first 2 victories
in the U.S. he must have stuffed his winnings in his suitcase and jetted back
to South Africa. Els would not be seen in the U.S. again in January, as his
next appearance was at the European Tour's Caltex Masters in Singapore.
Other winners for the month were Vijay Singh in the Phoenix Open, and
Mike Weir at the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic. Chris DiMarco also had a nice month
with a pair of third place finishes at the Sony and Bob Hope.
Els is
not scheduled back in the states until the WGC-Accenture Match Play in late
February. Also notably absent for the month was Tiger Woods who did not play in
January due to his recent knee surgery and rehabilitation. With Els out of
town, and Woods 'on the shelf' for the time being, we advise the rest of the
tour players to 'get while the getting' is good'.

Criteria for Golf Rank Index - Player of the
Month
The Golf Rank Index (GRI) - Player of the Month is determined
by totaling GRI ranking points earned in all GRI ranked professional golf
events scheduled within a months time frame. Events that bridge a months end or
beginning of another, are generally placed in the month in which they end, but
may be shifted to the prior month to balance the number of events to be ranked
in each month. In the event of a first place tie, co-winners will be
named.
Eligibility - All players participating in GRI ranked events are
eligible. They do not need to be a member of any professional golf tour.
Must Win - To be named a player of the month, the player MUST have a
win in a GRI ranked event in the month. Should any player without a win earn
the highest number of GRI ranking points for a given month, they will be placed
behind the highest ranked player with a win.
