(August 20, 2006 - Golf Rank Index) Tiger Woods Wins GRI 2006 Major Championship Player of the Year Tiger Woods Wins British Open & PGA to Take The Crown #2 - Masters Champion - Phil Mickelson #3 - U.S. Open Winner - Geoff Ogilvy Final 2006 Standings in PDF Format
By winning both the British Open and the PGA Championship Woods reminded us; never, ever count him out. As the only player with two major wins, Woods automatically wins the GRI 2006 Major Championship Player of the Year and he also won the points chase as well. Woods earned 947.20 points, more than 200 ahead of his nearest competition. Masters champion Phil Mickelson finished #2 on the Majors Index with 724 points. If not for a double bogey on the 72nd hole of the U.S. Open, he too could be in possesion of two major championship trophies. After the devistating loss in the U.S. Open Mickelson was not much of a factor in the British and PGA finishing T22 and T16 respectively. Geoff Ogilvy won the U.S. Open to finish 3rd on the Majors Index with 650 points. Ogilvy's worst major finishes were a pair of T16 finishes in the Masters and British. He notched another top-10 by finishing T9 in the PGA. Overview of 2006 Majors Week 14 - The Masters - Phil Mickelson earned 400 points for the win, followed by runner-up Tim Clark of South Africa earning 240 points for 2nd place. Five players tied for 3rd; Retief Goosen, Jose Maria Olazabal, Fred Couples, Chad Campbell and last years GRI Major Championship Player of the Year, Tiger Woods. The fivesome earned 147.20 points each. Week 24 - U.S. Open - Geoff Ogilvy earned 400 points for the win while Phil Mickelson, Colin Montgomerie and Jim Furyk earned 200 points apiece for their 2nd place tie. Both Mickelson and Monty leave the event with a lot to think about as both double bogeyed the last hole to fall one shot short of a playoff with Ogilvy. Week 29 - the Open Championship -Tiger Woods fought off a game challenge by Chris DiMarco at Royal Liverpool Golf Club in Hoylake, England to successfully defend his title and earn 400 points. Chris DiMarco earned 240 points for 2nd, Ernie Els earned 200 points for 3rd and Jim Furyk earned 160 points for 4th. Week 33 - PGA Championship - Tiger Woods makes it two majors in a row with his win at Medinah. Woods has never lost a major when he's held at least a share of the 3rd round lead and 2006 was no exception as he broke out of the tie with Luke Donald on the first hole then went on to win by five. Woods earned 400 points for the win while 2003 PGA Champ Shaun Micheel took 2nd to earn 240 points, while Donald, Sergio Garcia and Adam Scott earned 166.67 points each for their 3rd place tie. Criteria for Golf Rank Index - Major Championship Player of the Year The GRI Major Championship Player of the Year is based on points earned by the top-35 finishers in each of the 4 majors; The Masters, US Open, British Open and PGA. Must Win - To be named Major Championship Player of the Year, a player MUST have at least one win in one of the 4 major championships. Regardless of how many points earned, any player without a win will be placed behind ALL players with a win. The player who wins the most majors in the calendar year is automatically named the GRI-Major Championship Player of the Year. Should 2 players win two majors each, or 4 players win one major each, total GRI ranking points earned for the 4 majors will determine the winner. In the event of a tie, co-winners will be named. Eligibility - All players participating in any of the 4 majors are eligible. They do not need to be a member of any professional golf tour. '05 Masters and British Open Champion, Tiger Woods won the 2005 GRI Major Championship Player of the Year with 1190 points followed by U.S. Open Champion Michael Campbell with 630.67 points. PGA Champion Phil Mickelson finished the Major's campaign with 508.67 points. |
