By winning the first two events of the month, Phil Mickelson put an early lock on the GRI April Player of the Month race. Mickelson earned 400 points for his Masters win and 199.75 points for his win at the BellSouth Classic the week before, giving him a total of 599.75 points for the month.

Masters runner-up, and April #2 Tim Clark finished the month with 281.92 points followed by #3 Jose Maria Olazabal with 257.06 points. Neither Clark or Olazabal won April events, but both were able to move near the top of the April list as each notched two top-10 April finishes.

Shell Houston Open winner Stuart Appleby finished #4 in April with a total of 229.65 points followed by Verizon Heritage champion Aaron Baddeley who earned 226.60 points for the month.

Mickelson becomes the first player since Sandy Lyle in 1988 to win the event preceding the Masters and the Masters. Criteria for Golf Rank Index - Player of the Month

The Golf Rank Index (GRI) - Player of the Month is determined by totaling GRI ranking points earned in all GRI ranked professional golf events scheduled within a months time frame. Events that bridge a months end or beginning of another, are generally placed in the month in which they end, but may be shifted to the prior month to balance the number of events to be ranked in each month. In the event of a first place tie, co-winners will be named.

Eligibility - All players participating in GRI ranked events are eligible. They do not need to be a member of any professional golf tour.

Must Win - To be named a player of the month, the player MUST have a win in a GRI ranked event in the month. Should any player without a win earn the highest number of GRI ranking points for a given month, the player will be placed behind the highest ranked player with a win.
